Literary Crushes

Day 3.  I’ll be posting one a day for the next ten days–a list of my top ten completely platonic and not in any way obsessive literary crushes.  Here follow my all-time favorite cerebral, brooding, and sometimes tragic heroes in my very favorite books about them.

Sherlock HolmesThe Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle.  Who else could win my undying admiration but the world’s original consulting detective?  Sherlock Holmes, resident of 221B Baker Street, solves mysteries through a blend of scientific research and arcane local knowledge; the twelve tales in the Adventures, chronicled by Holmes’s assistant and roommate, Dr. John Watson, are some of the best in the canon.  All the iconic people and objects of Holmes’s world are present: from the Persian slipper to the pipe and violin, from Irene Adler to Mycroft Holmes to Professor James Moriarty.  If anyone can read the clues and outwit both police and criminals, Holmes can.

Key points: detective, brooding, cerebral, London, puzzles, disguises, nemesis
